Aliquippa Revitalization Strategy

KAIROS DESIGN GROUP is currently working with The City of Aliquippa on a Revitalization Strategy. The project focuses on an existing commercial corridor that has slowly deteriorated over the past 40 years with the demise of the once thriving steel industry. New urban infill development is one of the primary focuses for this project as well as tying the proposed streetscape improvements to an already existing revitalization effort. The revitalization strategy works to address a number of social issues by creating partnerships between the City, the local school districts, the higher education community, and the local banks in an effort to create a workforce development training program for the community. The strategy focuses on securing funding to assist the private development community in partnering with the City to create an affordable mix of housing and an ethnic themed fresh food grocery component that currently does not exist within the downtown. The recreational amenities included in the plan coordinate the revitalization efforts with trails and boat access points on the Ohio River corridor. The project aims to reconnect the community and its residents to the Ohio River by proposing both retail development and recreation opportunities adjacent to the now inaccessible riverfront. The connection to the River and the recreational amenity opportunities it provides is the backbone for the revitalization effort to attract new residents, businesses and retail to the core of the City. The inter-relationship between various city, county and state agencies have been developed to advance the project and to garner support from the local development community.
