The KAIROS DESIGN GROUP, LLC (KAIROS) is working with Rettew and the Borough of Schuylkill Haven to finalize the Master Plan for the 52-acre Island Park. A preliminary Master Plan was completed in 1999 and the design included passive and active amenities, including a 1,425-seat amphitheater, sports fields and courts, a seasonal ice skating rink, trails and picnic areas, playground, boat launch ramp, senior citizen and childcare facility, and museum facilities for historical railroad and canal artifacts and information.

The first phase will include a skate park intended to be used as a regional facility, bandshell and amphitheater that is similar in nature to those located at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds, and a pedestrian crossing on the railroad bridge that will connect the community park with the core downtown area.

Island Park is located within the Schuylkill River Heritage Area and this project also requires consideration of the eventual connection to the “Bartram Trail” section of the Schuylkill River Trail.
