Locust Street Stairs

Locust Street Staircase
Borough of Steeton, Dauphin County, PA

The KAIROS DESIGN GROUP, LLC (KAIROS) the retained landscape architect for the Borough of Steelton, provided landscape architectural services for the enhancement of the Borough’s historic Locust Street Staircase. The Stairs act as a formal and majestic pedestrian connection for the residential areas of Second and Third Streets with the Steelton downtown core business district. They were originally constructed in 1911 to provide steel mill workers with a pedestrian connection to the mill’s main gate entrance located at Locust Street and Front Street.

KAIROS provided the Borough with three conceptual planting and material designs for this project. The selected design includes decorative lighting around the grand staircase, a wall fountain on the midway landing, seating areas with decorative benches, and plant enhancements for the terraced/sloped hillside areas.

This project is the first phase toward implementation of the Borough’s Second Street Streetscape Masterplan Project, which KAIROS previously completed under Pennsylvania’s Elm Street Program.
