To assist in the urban redevelopment of the Midtown region of the City of Harrisburg, KAIROS DESIGN GROUP, LLC, (KAIROS) is providing urban streetscape and landscape architectural services to Powers & Associates, LLC (Powers).

Using a series of “overlay” renderings, KAIROS proposed the creation of an “urban meadow” pedestrian walkway to effectively connect the Press Building and Harrisburg Area Community College’s (HACC’s) Community Center for Technology and the Arts. The Urban Meadow is intended to be designed as a “Living Laboratory” that combines the aesthetic benefits of meadow grasses, native shade trees and bio-diverse ground cover masses that are pleasing to the eye, but function to mitigate the ecological problems associated with the urban streetscape. The integrated use of native plant materials and rain garden collection/filtration systems is intended to provide a hands-on example of how the appropriate use of plant materials, in engineered settings, can remove petroleum products from storm water run-off generated by parking areas and city streets. The goal of this unique design effort is to educate the HACC students, and the public at-large, on environmentally appropriate site design and storm water collection and conveyance systems.

KAIROS will continue to work with HACC, the City of Harrisburg, various state agencies, and Powers in this unique, ongoing revitalization effort.
